These JISC people just get everywhere!

It was great meeting up with colleagues from other universities again and meeting new folk from F.E. colleges. The venue for the forum this time was City College Coventry , very nearly brand-spanking new and looking very impressive with all the technology at their finger-tips. We were welcomed by Rob Talbot who told us how they are trying out OpenSim and the potential uses they are trying it for. The next speaker was the very impressive Annabeth Robinson (the well-known AngryBeth Shortbread in Second Life) who is Senior Lecturer for Digital Film, Game and Animation at Leeds Art College. I’m very interested in ReactionGrid and have been considering the use of Jibe and Unity3D for sometime so it was great to see what Annabeth had been doing with it. The last speaker was Peter Miller who is a Lecturer in Plant Sciences at University of Liverpool. I first met Peter in Second Life where he is known as Graham and I’m constantly calling him by the wrong name! Anyway, Peter had been considering moving to OpenSim but due to unforeseen circumstances had to make the move last year, somewhat earlier than he had intended. Peter was talking about how the move to OpenSim went, the successes as well as the trials and tribulations.
Sorry Pathfinder but I still find OpenSim cold compared to Second Life – there are so few people there and no real community spirit or social participation and, worst of all, no shops! Jokaydia is nice though 🙂
